Mobile Phone Etiquette
Mobile phone usage is now often under the spotlight as people now want to reduce their connectivity when they want to escape their hectic lives and the annoyance of other people on their calls. Now many train companies prohibit the use of mobile phone on some of their carriages.
Mobile phone use is often seen as a social discourtesy. Phones ringing during funerals, weddings, meetings or places of worship is deemed as taboo.
Trains, particularly those involving long-distance services, often offer a "quiet carriage" where phone use is prohibited. Sometimes users tend to ignore this as it is rarely enforced.
Mobile phone use is also prohibited on aircrafts and many airlines claim in their in-plane announcements that this prohibition is due to possible interference with aircraft radio communications.
Top 5 tips for using your mobile within the workplace without disturbing others:
- Ensure your mobile phone is off or on silent mode during meetings and refrain from answering any calls received until the meeting is over. Do not leave the vibrate setting on as this can be as disturbing as a ringtone.
- If you are expecting an important call during a meeting, let the participants know at the beginning of the meeting. When you receive the call, discreetly excuse yourself from the room
- Don’t check emails on either BlackBerry devices or laptops during meetings. If necessary, turn on ‘Out of Office’ to alert those emailing you that you will be in a meeting and are unable to respond immediately
- Remember to take your phone with you if you leave your desk, or turn the phone off or onto silent mode
- Ask your employer or HR department to provide a policy on the appropriate use of mobile devices in your workplace
